Keep this in mind: If the worst happens and you, or someone you care about, is in the hospital following a rape or rape attempt, ASK FOR AN ADVOCATE and/or a SAFE nurse. (SAFE stands for something, I forget what.) The policies differ from state to state, but in New York City at least, you should be entitled to an advocate. ASK FOR AN ADVOCATE. Someone can sit there with you during questioning from the police and tell them to back the fuck off when they do this. I’ve volunteered as an advocate and nothing gets me off more than telling some 22 year old fuckboy cop to back off from my survivor as she tells her story. Your advocate will explain things to you, will hold you hand if you want, try to get you snacks or water if it’s appropriate, and stand up for you to cops, doctors, and whoever else might try to get in your face. Advocates are amazing. (And if you are reading this thinking you might like to be one, look into it! There are many advocacy groups out there for survivors of rape and IPV. In NYC, you can try SAVI but there are others.)
