hello everyone! i saw a post recently pointing out that a lot of american kids are not taught literally anything about state or federal labor laws, and the way school is set up really does not prepare us for the way things work in the real world!
a disclaimer: i am not a lawyer. this post is a very broad overview.
in this post, i am talking solely about federal labor laws + worker’s rights in the united states. none of this applies to other countries; y’all got your own dang laws. please do not take any of this post as legal advice. it is not. please contact a lawyer or the department of labor if you’ve got specific issues/concerns. different states have different laws regarding and protections for workers, and your state may exceed the federal requirements.
This post is very, very link heavy. I attempt to provide links to summaries or the full text of major relevant laws, and also information on various departments that handle questions & complaints.
another note before we start: please let me know if you spot any errors in this post! i want it reasonably accurate.
FIRST THINGS FIRST, IF U GOT PRESSING CONCERNS
How to contact the Department of Labor –
The DOL maintaints a list of how to contact each state’s DOL offices. That can be found here. The Wage and Hour Division can be called at
1-866-4USWAGE, or you can find their offices listed online also. If you have an OSHA (safety) complaint, you can find their contact information here. They also have an online complaints form, a list of state/local OSHA offices with addresses and phone numbers, and can be called at 1-800-321-OSHA in case of emergency.
NOW LET’S SUMMARIZE US LABOR LAWS!
So here’s a somewhat informative thing my roommate wrote that may be very useful to various among us who have or wish to have jobs!
