you know what else? This situation creates an effect that piles up on the bottom, having the strongest effect on those already struggling the most. It’s something I’ve noticed and started calling the “spare change effect” which is:
Inflation and the above situations all happen BUT THE NUMBER AND TYPE OF COINS YOU FIND IN YOUR POCKETS AND COUCH CUSHIONS STAYS THE SAME.
Like, if I ran out of gas on the road, I used to be able to walk around and find a gallon’s worth of money in the gutter and shit. A gallon of gas was 55 cents, you could check under the front edge of a vending machine and get home. But now, 25 years later, gas prices have gone up nearly 800% but there’s not 800 times the amount of loose change around, ya know?
