sometimes people sell their souls on eBay, which can be a very interesting purchase to make when you are writing a paper on the commodification of the supernatural and the industry that’s sprung up for paranormal experiences
Unfortunately, that sale is against ebay’s TOS and should have been reported.
according to a statement from ebay made in 2000:
“eBay does not allow the auctioning of human souls for the following reasons: If the soul does not exist, eBay could not allow the auctioning of the soul because there would be nothing to sell. However, if the soul does exist then, in accordance with eBay’s policy on human parts and remains, we would not allow the auctioning of human souls.“
That formed part of my paper.
eBay’s ban on paranormal things is largely due to the fact that they cannot determine whether an item or service has been rendered if it’s intangible; you can buy a ghost or a spell from someone, but who’s to say that it arrived or is as described? That’s why sales of haunted dolls or human souls are “technically” for the tangible item being offered rather than their spiritual qualities, which in this case was a signed contract and a piece of hair.
